The Honourable Minister Adegboyega Oyetola addressed the House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee on the Baro River Port — describing it as a symbol of Nigeria’s shared resolve to expand its economic frontiers.
He noted that the port was conceived to decongest road corridors, create jobs, boost trade, serve as a logistics hub for agriculture and solid minerals, and promote eco-friendly, cost-effective transportation.
While acknowledging the challenges since its 2019 commissioning — including poor road and rail linkages and navigability issues along the River Niger — the Minister emphasised its immense potential to connect with Onitsha, Lokoja, and Warri ports, and strengthen Nigeria’s trade under AfCFTA.
H.E reaffirmed that the Ministry is working with key MDAs to improve navigability through dredging, build critical transport connections, attract reputable private sector partners, and ensure transparent, efficient operations.
He expressed confidence that with collective commitment, the Baro Port will be transformed from a dormant facility into a thriving inland gateway powering regional growth.
