Maritime Journalists To Honour Oyebamiji As Most Media Friendly CEO in Marine Sector

The Maritime Journalists under the auspices of Coalition of Maritime Journalists have described the Osun State All Progressive Congress (APC) Governorship Candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji (AMBO) as the most outstanding and media friendly Chief Executive Officer in the Marine Sector during the current administration.

The coalition in Osogbo yesterday, during a courtesy visit and presentation of notification of award to Oyebamiji, a former Managing Director of National Inland Waterways (NIWA), said the outstanding achievement of Bola Oyebamiji within two years in NIWA will continue to resonate in the mind of the inland waterways communities and stakeholders in the maritime sector, describing it as historical and impactful.

Chairman of the Coalition, Frank Meke, while presenting letter of notification of award as "Most Media Friendly" CEO in maritime sector to Oyebamiji, described the APC governship candidate as a dependable and visionary leader who was passionate about development in the maritime sector, adding that his tenure recorded unprecedented infrastructural and human development in NIWA which has refined the agency operation especially in the area of safety on the waterways.
He said the Oyebamiji through collaborative efforts reduced boat mishap by over 70% and built strong professional partnership with maritime journalists with access to first hand information about the operations, expenditures and other activities of NIWA which has refined the image of the agency in the public.

He said Oyebamiji recognised journalists as partners in the development of NIWA and marine sector through several supports, especially communication equipment and timely responses to information request and described him as a model of transparency and accountability in leadership.

He added that the award is unprecedented in the industry, adding that no Chief Executive Officer has been celebrated in the manner Oyebamiji is being celebrated, a development which he said underscores the respect and honour that maritime journalists have for Bola Oyebamiji.

Oyebamiji while accepting the notification of the award appreciated the maritime journalists for the honour, especially coming at a time that he had left the agency as CEO. He attributed all the success recorded to God, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Alhaji Isiaka Adegboyega Oyetola,  all the staff of NIWA and other stakeholders in the maritime sector.

He said one of the most cherished achievements in the sector is human capacity development that redefined the working culture in the agency by making that staff were safe and more efficient on waterways.

He disclosed that during his tenure, the Federal Government approved about N14.6 billion for the procurement of modern boats targeted mainly at strengthening inland water transport operations in northern riverine states where boat mishaps have become a major burden.

Oyebamiji explained that the intervention would strengthen safety and trade in the North, while coastal states such as Lagos, Rivers (Port Harcourt) and Delta are expected to drive their own investments in modern vessels, either directly or through Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs).

He said, "during my tenure, I submitted a proposal to the Federal Government through the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy and about N14.6 billion was approved for standard boats and ferries to move agricultural products and passengers safely,”

"The vessels are expected to be delivered in about 6 months. It will also be deployed to other riverine states including Benue and Kogi, where waterways remain critical for local transportation and commercial activities. While wooden boats account for about 20 to 25 percent of challenges on inland waters, human factors contribute nearly 70 percent of accidents,  therefore, beyond technology and infrastructure, we ensured capacity development for NIWA workers through training, supervision and discipline. Safety is not just about vessels; it is also about behaviour. With better boats, training and sensitisation, we changed their culture,” Oyebamiji said.

He urged the journalists to continue to support the minster, saying he is determined to strengthen the marine sector as the economic base of the country.
