Nigeria Records Historic 300,000MT Surge in Fish Production, First Growth in a Decade

Nigeria has recorded a landmark breakthrough in the fisheries sector with a historic increase of over 300,000 metric tonnes (MT) in fish production — the first significant rise in more than ten years.

This remarkable achievement is widely attributed to the strategic leadership and reform-driven policies of the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, H.E. (Dr.) Adegboyega Oyetola, CON, whose commitment to revitalizing the marine sector is already yielding tangible results.
Since assuming office, the Minister has introduced targeted interventions aimed at boosting local fish production, supporting aquaculture businesses, strengthening coastal economies, and reducing Nigeria’s heavy dependence on fish importation. These measures have not only stimulated growth across the value chain but have also improved food security, created employment opportunities, and enhanced livelihoods for thousands of Nigerians involved in fisheries and aquaculture.

Stakeholders in the industry have described the surge as a turning point, noting that the renewed focus on infrastructure development, regulatory reforms, and private-sector participation has restored confidence in Nigeria’s marine economy.

Analysts believe this development positions Nigeria on a stronger path toward self-sufficiency in fish production while advancing the broader objectives of the Federal Government’s economic diversification agenda.

With this historic milestone, the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy under Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola continues to demonstrate that purposeful leadership, sound policy direction, and strategic investment can unlock the vast potential of Nigeria’s blue economy.
