OSUN LOCAL GOVERNMENT CRISIS: GOVERNOR ADELEKE MUST STOP BLACKMAILING ASIWAJU GBOYEGA OYETOLA
I am compelled to intervene on the ongoing Osun State Local Government crisis because I was a member of the PDP when these events occurred and participated directly in consultations at critical stages.
The foundation of the present crisis was the unnecessary confrontation with the Osun State Chief Judge, Justice Mrs. Ojo, followed by a wrong legal strategy. Instead of approaching the court with jurisdiction over Local Government election matters, the PDP took the matter to the Federal High Court, introducing federal and human-rights arguments into what was purely a local electoral dispute.
Although the PDP initially secured a judgment at the Federal High Court, that decision was overturned at the Court of Appeal. On 10 February 2025, the Court of Appeal reinstated the APC Local Government Council officials.
Following this judgment, Governor Ademola Adeleke sought legal advice from the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, who clearly advised that no Local Government election should be conducted because there was no vacancy.
This sound advice was ignored.
Immediately after the judgment, I advised the Governor, the Deputy Governor, party leaders, key stakeholders, and the Attorney-General of Osun State to apply for a Stay of Execution and appeal to the Supreme Court, so that Local Government elections could lawfully be conducted pending appeal. This advice was rejected.
I further advised that OSIEC should issue a notice of fresh elections, so that once the tenure of the reinstated councils expired, the PDP would have a lawful opportunity to return through the ballot. This too was ignored.
For Governor Adeleke to now turn around to blackmail Asiwaju Gboyega Oyetola and drag external institutions into this matter is unfair and misleading.
The truth is simple:
this crisis is self-inflicted.
The lawful options before the Governor are clear:
1. Work with the reinstated APC Local Government Council officials, or
2. Allow them to operate in peace until their tenure lawfully expires
Anything outside this framework undermines the rule of law and deepens instability in Osun State.
UBA a Bank where wise people bank will never obey illegal instruction from Osun State Government .

Mp Oluwole Oke
Member, House of Representatives
Federal Republic of Nigeria
