Senate Reduces INEC Election Notice Period, Sets New Deadline

The Senate has approved a reduction in the timeline for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to publish the notice of election, cutting it from 360 days to 180 days.

The decision followed the adoption of a motion by Senator Tahir Monguno, who proposed that the previous 360-day requirement be shortened to 180 days.

Monguno explained the rationale for the reduction, saying, “The adjustment is necessary to enable INEC meet up with the requirements on publication of notice.
“It would already be late if the 360 days was taken into consideration regarding the next general election.”

With the amendment, INEC now has more time to publish the notice ahead of the 2027 elections.
