Accord Party And PDP Alliance Faces Early Strain In Osun State
A fresh political rift appears to be brewing between the Accord Party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State, raising concerns that the emerging alliance between both parties may unravel sooner than expected.
The tension escalated over the weekend following remarks attributed to the embattled PDP State Chairman, who reportedly directed PDP ward and local government chairmen to assume control of the Accord Party’s structures across the state. The chairman also allegedly claimed that the Accord Party lacked a viable structure prior to the defection of the state governor into the party last year.
Reacting strongly, factions within the Accord Party have rejected the statement, describing it as provocative and disrespectful to the party’s existing framework.
“Our party has an established structure, and any attempt to completely take it over is unacceptable,” said Mr. Oluwole Adedapo, a local government chairman of the Accord Party.
An anonymous party member also criticized the PDP leadership, attributing the move to political desperation.
“What we are seeing is a struggle for control ahead of elections. We will not allow external forces to hijack our party or destroy it the way PDP has been weakened internally,” the source said.
Further deepening the crisis, members of the Accord Party’s State Working Committee reportedly held a meeting on Sunday evening, where they reaffirmed their independence and insisted that the party had not been “sold” to any political figure or group.
Sources from the meeting disclosed that the party leadership is increasingly concerned about internal silence on the matter, noting that their chairman was deliberately excluded from the meeting due to growing dissatisfaction among members.
They also advised the PDP leadership to focus on resolving its internal challenges rather than interfering in the affairs of the Accord Party.
Observers say the unfolding developments could significantly impact political alignments in Osun State ahead of future elections.
More details are expected as the situation develops.
